There Was No
Room in the Inn

Pepper is a 30 year old mother of 2 who came to our Women and Children’s Center on September 1st of this year. Unfortunately, she waited well over a month before there was a bed available stating, “I called every day and sometimes twice a day for over a month.”

At the time she first began to call here, Pepper was enrolled in a 2 week drug program in Benson. She said,

“I not only called the Mission, but I called other recovery programs in Tucson. No one had room for me. The Mission was the only place I called daily, every morning at 7:30 sharp. At the time, I didn’t know why I was so drawn to keep calling the Mission. Now that I’ve been here a few months, I know God had a plan and purpose for me being here and not in some other program.”

Pepper’s drug of choice was Meth, but she confesses that she’s used every kind of drug over the years. She began using at age 15…a habit now consuming one half of her lifetime. She said,

“I was losing my sanity to drugs. My reality and thinking was all messed up. The drug program in Benson confirmed this. Unfortunately due to the drug use I’m now on psychiatric drugs and will probably have to take these meds the rest of my life.”

According to Pepper, all of her family… parents and siblings… except for one sister… uses drugs. She added,

“I grew up with drugs all around me, so it wasn’t hard to get started. I want to be an example to my family that you can get off of drugs if you want to. Maybe they will want to. I also want to make my children proud of me.
I know my kids have also been around drugs their whole life. I’m hoping and trusting God that they won’t make the same bad mistakes I have. My mom and I study the same Bible verses each day and then we talk on the phone and discuss them. I’m not only growing closer to God, but my mom is too.”

Her children are living with relatives in Cochise County and she is looking forward to the day that she’ll be reunited with them. She knows she has a long way to go in her recovery and its day by day fight... that any given day could present a relapse. Pepper is encouraged as each day goes by as yet another sober day… since her first one on June 21st.

She finished by saying,

“I’m glad I’m at the Mission because I’m feeling life in a way I’ve never felt before.
I’m getting closer each day to my Heavenly Father. I knew of God and Christ, but now I truly know God and my Savior, Jesus. I’m in the best place I’ve ever been my whole life, because of Gospel Rescue Mission.”

It is still difficult to tell women each day that we have no room at the Mission. We fully understand that not
all of them are as persistent as Pepper to call every day. In fact, most lose hope and just give up. We don’t want anyone to give up and we don’t want to tell a woman and her children that “there is no room in the inn”. That’s why we just purchased a transitional house (see articles and pictures in this issue) and we are still looking for a much larger facility for the shelter and recovery programs.

We trust you feel the same way about these women and their children and will prayerfully and financially support us in this endeavor. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE ROOM IN THE INN!
