Volunteering…
A Learned Character ValueNeedless to say, most of the men and women we serve at the Mission did not grow up in homes where volunteering and giving to others were role modeled and experienced. They also don’t feel worthy of giving to others. However, the good news is…it’s never too late to experience and learn this important value.
That’s why our students are encouraged and presented with volunteer activities throughout the year. They choose to participate…or not. Once they do…they soon realize how blessed they were by helping someone else and they want to volunteer even more. They all say that they get more out of the experience than they gave…isn’t that true for all of us who give to others!
Our program students from the Men’s Center volunteer annually at: - Hope Fest (cooking hot dogs and as chaplains)
- Christian camp (maintenance of buildings)
- Forest Service (clearing trails)
- Neighborhood Associations (cooking food, helping with parking, hosting)
- Tucson’s Birthday Prayer Celebration (transportation & parking cars)
- and Recovery Walk to name a few activities.
Our program students from the Women’s Center volunteer monthly serving: - Urban League Senior’s Program - Spa Day (paint fingernails, style hair, massages, play table games, sit and chat, and serve lunch)
- Volunteer with other social service programs (clean buildings), to name a few activities.
We trust our students will continue to involve themselves in volunteer opportunities as they leave the "Mission" and integrate back into the community. Whether in neighborhood associations, social service programs, or health organizations, etc…whether with youth or elderly…around us everywhere are people who need help and a special touch from someone who cares.
