Gospel Rescue Mission Launches ‘Operation Rescue from the Heat’ to Save Lives This Summer

TUCSON, Ariz., May 20, 2025 — As temperatures rise and Southern Arizona braces for another blistering summer, Gospel Rescue Mission (GRM) is stepping up to protect the most vulnerable. On June 2, GRM will officially launch Operation Rescue from the Heat—a daily outreach initiative that goes beyond traditional cooling centers to provide holistic, life-saving care to men and women experiencing homelessness.
From 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, individuals will be welcomed into the Center of Opportunity for respite from the heat and access to vital services—all at no cost.
“Every year, dozens of vulnerable individuals lose their lives to the heat,” said Lisa Chastain, CEO of Gospel Rescue Mission. “Our hope is to offer more than just a safe place to cool down—we want to provide a doorway to lasting change, where guests can access the support, services, and relationships they need to leave homelessness behind for good.”
Services offered through Operation Rescue from the Heat include:
- A safe, air-conditioned environment with access to common areas and day beds
- Hot showers, hygiene items, and laundry facilities
- Clean clothing for those in need
- Nutritious lunch and dinner shared alongside GRM’s residential guests
- Activities to restore dignity and community, including games, books, and music
- On-site staff and volunteers ready to assist with intake, recovery programs, and housing options upon request
More than relief, this is rescue.
According to recent reporting from AZ Luminaria, heat-related deaths in Pima County rose by 50% last year, many involving fentanyl or methamphetamine use. “People experiencing homelessness are not just vulnerable to the heat—they’re often dehydrated, nutrient-deficient, and already in poor health,” said Chastain. “And many are afraid. Afraid of judgment, of shelters, of being told they’re too far gone.”
At GRM, we understand the importance of addressing both physical and emotional needs with compassion and dignity. Every guest is seen, known, and invited into a deeper journey of healing— through programs in addiction recovery, workforce development, housing assistance, and comprehensive wraparound services designed to support full life transformation.
