Children Services Lead Teacher

Qualifications:                 

Required minimum high school diploma or GED.  Preferred associate’s degree in education or child development field; in lieu of associates, experience in caring for and teaching children in a day care or elementary setting may be acceptable; Must be an evangelical Christian who lives a life dedicated to Christ so you can be an instrument of God’s hope, love and forgiveness to the guests we serve.

Skills Required:               

Personal traits of patience, gentleness and kindness; Ability to explain the Gospel and salvation to children; Knowledge and ability to discipline properly; interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with parents, staff and outside resources; staff supervision and budgeting skills; ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds solo.

Physical Demands:

(The nature of physical effort leading to physical fatigue.) Caring for children can be physically demanding.  This individual will be lifting and carrying children and equipment, and will spend time sting on the floor or child sized furniture.  This individual will be expected to clean and maintain equipment and facility, and will move throughout the community with the children. This individual will come in contact with children who are ill and/or contagious, and must take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents and themselves.

Mental Demands:           

The population we serve are typically in crisis.  This can cause emotional stress and compassion fatigue.  GRM highly promotes employee self-care. 

Employment Status:       Full-time nonexempt 40 hours per week; eligible for benefits; eligible for paid time off.       *Anticipate Flexible Schedules

Responsibilities and Duties

Client Services

  • Actively participate in the process of developing Christian disciples.
  • Establish and build healthy Christ honoring relationships with children and their mothers
  • Pray with and counsel children and their mothers relating to spiritual, personal and program needs
  • Teach Bible stories and concepts in an age appropriate manner to all children
  • Under the supervision of the Guest Services Coordinator, maintain the Daytime Children’s Program
  • Provide a nurturing, loving and supportive learning environment that is safe and clean, as well as being spiritual and educational
  • Collaborate with the Children Services Teachers in the creation and preparation of lesson and activity plans that support age appropriate spiritual, mental, emotional, educational and physical growth of children in a multi-age classroom
  • Read to children, and teach them simple painting, drawing, crafts and songs
  • Organize and participate in recreational activities, such as games and simple sports
  • Observe and monitor children’s play activities
  • Support children’s emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts
  • Provide appropriate support for mental, emotional, academically or physically challenged children
  • Provide age-appropriate crisis intervention and conflict resolution as needed
  • Discipline children appropriately and recommend or initiate other measures to control behavior, such as caring for own clothing and picking up toys and book
  • Participate in caring for the safety and various needs of children and babies
    • Feed or provide age-appropriate food for all children as needed
    • Instruct children in health and personal habits such as eating, resting and toilet habits
    • Dress children and change diapers
  • Actively provide and maintain an effective after-school program which includes assistance with tutoring needs, school projects and development of computer skills.
  • In collaboration with the Children’s Services Teachers, utilize outside resources to enhance the Daytime Children’s Program
    • Plan field trips and off-site activities (Youth Haven, VBS & other church related events, Zoo trips, etc)
    • Communicate and collaborate with outside agencies as needed for client advocacy and child case management (DCS, Blake Foundation, Casas de los Ninos, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, McKinney Vento, local schools, behavioral health agencies, etc)
    • With the guidance of Guest Services Coordinator, enlist outside agency speakers and other services/resources for children and parents (Gabriel’s Angels, Mad Scientist, Tucson Police Department, Pima Youth Partnership, Parenting AZ, etc.)
  • In collaboration with the Children Services teachers, maintain a strong evening program for children on property
    • Review and monitor lessons of chapel speakers; assuring material is consistent with biblical principles detailed in Gospel Rescue Mission policies.
    • Provide biblical instruction through teaching in 1:1 instruction, classes, and Children’s Chapel services
    • Compile reports and keep records relating to chapel services and 1:1 ministry with children
    • Perform dining room or courtyard/playground monitoring as requested
  • Maintain client files on each child in a timely manner including daily observations and information about activities, snacks or meals served, and any behavior concerns or issues

 Other Services (10%)

  • In collaboration with the Guest Services Coordinator, conduct intakes and service planning with each child, reviewing their plan periodically
  • Orient mothers to the Children’s Services structure, values and standards
  • Assist mothers with obtaining medical care for their children as needed. This includes tracking medical care and medications with mothers
  • Manage inventory utilizing donations and outside resources to meet the seasonal needs of children (school clothing, backpacks, Christmas presents)
  • Manage and track distribution of bicycles and helmets for women and children on property
  • In collaboration with the Guest Services Coordinator, coordinate the Adopt-a-Family/Single event for Christmas
  • Order program equipment, supplies and gifts for children as needed
  • Confer with parent and case manager regarding children’s progress and issues
  • Train and supervise Children’s Services staff under the direction of the Guest Services Coordinator
  • Provide orientation, training, monitoring, evaluation and support for volunteers assigned to Children’s Services
  • Assist the Guest Services Coordinator in making recommendations to develop and monitor Children’s Services budget
  • Attend meetings, professional training and networking opportunities as directed
  • Other duties as assigned
